This might sound like a silly question on the surface but we believe that it is worth a bit of thought.
The textbook answer that you hear most often is that your Support Worker helps your family to overcome the additional challenges that arise from having a member or members of the family living with a disability.
This line of thinking results in what you could call a ‘task based’ approach. You would take clients to their appointments and classes, you provide transport to and from school, you take them out into the community and you help to cook and clean.
Shape Your Support’s current answer to the question is that it’s our job to support our clients to become better humans and live better lives.
We like this answer because it challenges us to think bigger. Instead of a ‘task based’ approach you could call it more of a ‘strategic approach’.
Attending a class becomes about dealing with nerves and anxieties in all situations and heading into the community becomes about socialising with others and learning that we don’t have to be in control all of the time.
